Reducing the
Carbon Footprint

No product is without environmental impact, however wood comes close.  Wood has a symbiotic relationship that no other material can claim: trees produce oxygen and wood stores carbon. Far and away wood is the most environmentally natural, renewable and sustainable material on earth. There are two principal ways that wood contributes to the efforts to minimize CO2 emissions and global warming:  carbon sequestration and low energy consumption. In addition to nature’s symbiotic relationship, carbon continues to be sequestered after harvest limiting green house gasses. To further enhance this process, wood preservation extends the natural life cycle of untreated wood by decades.   As nature generates most of the energy required in the growth of a tree, energy requirements continue to remain low throughout the manufacturing process as the tree is milled into numerous sawn products. Unlike quarry or fossil intensive products used in manufacturing, wood is the only product that can far exceed a sustainable supply with low energy consumption throughout its entire life cycle.

  • Energy requirements for manufacturing wood light poles are low - less than 10% of the energy needed to process wood as compared with steel, aluminum or concrete.

  • Wood is recyclable and continues to store greenhouse gases during its service life, reuse and disposal - a total period easily in excess of a century.

  • Carbon Sequestration:  Wood preservation extends the service life and continues to store the carbon that existed when trees were harvested.

Renewable, sustainable, stores carbon emissions, low energy consumption -- wood is the “green” standard by which alternative products are measured.   TimberWood Products
